Private trainee doctors have again occupied the Shahbagh intersection, demanding their monthly allowances be doubled.
They began a sit-in protest on Sunday morning in front of the main gate of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
The protesters broke through police barricades around 11:30am and blocked the road, causing traffic to come to a standstill.
The agitated protesters claimed that while government doctors receive salaries in the ninth grade, the private doctors face discrimination.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Monsur told the media that the trainee doctors came onto the road around 11:30 am.
The blockade halted traffic movement, causing commuters to suffer.
A trainee doctor’s current monthly allowance is Tk 25,000.
Earlier on December 22, they blocked the Shahbagh, demanding a hike in their monthly stipends.
The finance division issued a circular on Monday increasing the allowance to Tk 30,000. But the doctors rejected the hike and warned of stricter programmes if their demands were not met.
