Tips to stay safe from ‘Devil’s Breath’

NN Desk:

Authorities have issued warnings following recent incidents in Dhaka where criminals reportedly used a dangerous drug, known as “Devil’s Breath,” to rob unsuspecting victims.

At least two individuals have fallen prey to this substance, losing awareness and willingly handing over their valuables before waking up with no memory of the event.

According to eyewitness accounts, the perpetrators approached passersby, asking for directions while holding slips of paper. Shortly after interacting with the suspects, victims experienced confusion and disorientation, later realizing they had been robbed.

Law enforcement agencies have expressed growing concern over the increasing use of this substance in criminal activities.

What is Devil’s Breath?
Also known as scopolamine or burundanga, Devil’s Breath is a potent drug derived from the Borrachero shrub, native to South America. It has strong anticholinergic effects, which render victims highly suggestible and incapable of resisting commands.“

Once exposed to the drug, victims lose free will and become completely compliant.

They often appear normal but will follow instructions given by the perpetrator, making it difficult to detect that a crime is taking place,” said a senior official from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Although commonly believed to be absorbed through the skin or inhaled, experts clarify that the drug is usually administered through food or drinks. In medical settings, scopolamine is used in small doses to treat motion sickness and gastrointestinal disorders, but in high doses, it causes memory loss, confusion, and hallucinations.
