Five people, including three children were injured in an explosion at a house in Amana Bazar under Hathazari upazila in Chattogram on Friday evening.
The injured were identified as Soni Akter, 26; her one-year-old twin daughters; Rubi Akter, 16; and Rajia Akter, 11, said Assistant Sub-inspector Abdul Aziz of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) police outpost.
The injured are undergoing treatment at CMCH’s Burn and Plastic Surgery unit, he said.
Assistant Sub-inspector Mollah Jahangir Kabir of Hathazari Police Station said the explosion occurred at the house on the third floor of a three-storey building in Aman Bazar area around 8.00pm. “The reason behind the explosion could not be known immediately,” he said from the spot at 9.00pm on Friday.
However, Superintendent of Chattogram Police Nur-e-Alam Mina said the explosion occurred due to leakage in gas line of the house. Soni’s husband Anisur, who has been running a fast food shop in the area for some 15 years, rented the house jointly with another family yesterday, said the SP, adding, “When they lit a match in the kitchen, an explosion occurred.”
