The university students all over the country are expressing fury and anger in protest against the heartless killing of a BUET student Abrar. The whole nation is in sympathy with the students for the feeling of culpability in its helplessness to be helpful to the children about their safety.
The killers of Abrar are also fellow students engaged in government’s student front named Students League. The incident is all the more frustrating that he was calmly murdered for his views not supportive of the government by the government supported students. He was not involved in agitational politics and was beaten to death in the university dormitory at night.
After the horrific incident what has made the people frustrated is the fact that the Vice-Chancellor, Provost and others responsible for safety and care of the students knew about the existence of torture cells and the criminal activities of the members of the Students League but did stop such activities. The activities of torture and harassment were a daily affair. The students were living in fear being attacked. All such acts connivance and negligence of the university authority are now open before the public.
The Vice-Chancellor, Provost are criminally responsible as abettors of the murder and they must be made accused in the murder that took place within the university dormitory. They surely helped and harboured the criminals who committed the murder knowing that the university authority was with them.
The Vice-Chancellor of BUET as a criminal conspirator should have resigned immediately admitting his incompetence to be remained in the teaching profession. He is devoid of sense of responsibility. Surely he was chosen to be Vice-Chancellor for his political loyalty.
We have also to say this in their defence that as students of the premier university BUET they were among the very good and hard working students. The Vice-Chancellor and others including teachers owe an explanation as to how they became criminals of worst order under their care.
It is unimportant whether the students responsible for the crime have been expelled or not, when the Vice-Chancellor and others who cooperated with the students by looking the other way, were paid by the people for their duties as teachers, but they acted as political workers. They cannot go criminally unpunished for the death of Abrar and ruining the lives of those who became not only murderers but also involved in other crimes like torture and extortion.
Detailed investigation will reveal that these students were making money by extortion from outside people using the torture cells. We claim it but let there be impartial investigation about the whole episode.
The allegations are that not only BUET but also all other public universities have these torture cells run by student leaders, but because of the teachers and VCs who are activists of party politics of the government, no interference is faced. It should be clear as grave public concern that the students are becoming criminals under the university authority and teachers.
We cannot accept that those who are paid by our people should treat our children’s lives as of no value. The painful truth is because of criminalisation of party politics the public universities have become centres of violence and crimes.
Nobody says that academically there will not be politics or political awareness among the university students. What is wrong is to allow criminalised and intolerant party politics on the campus.
The VCs and teachers together should have stopped party politics for protecting academic atmosphere. Instead they also joined party politics and behaved like loyal party activists for selfish reasons.
There is no ideology in party politics-only crime and corruption. The crimes are protected by subduing the judiciary and corrupting the police. As university teachers they know best.
