Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs, has stated that there is no magic button or simple on-off switch to immediately stop killings. “If such a switch existed, I would have turned it off by now,” he said.

The adviser made these remarks on Monday after a meeting of the Law and Order Advisory Committee at the Secretariat, responding to journalists’ questions about recent murders, including the killing of a freedom fighter and his wife at their Rangpur home.

He noted that violent incidents have been occurring even before the upcoming national election and denied any possibility of completely halting these murders ahead of the polls. “These killings are not just election-related; they have been happening before as well,” he said.

Chowdhury further revealed that the victims in Rangpur had children serving in police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and directed law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice swiftly.

Regarding election preparations, he confirmed that every polling station will have reliable electricity supply, and alternative arrangements are made where power outages occur. “The preparations for the election are good. All forces are undergoing training, which will conclude by January,” he added.

Addressing public skepticism about the election’s fairness, the adviser appealed to the media to promote confidence by reporting that the election will take place as planned.

He also announced initiatives to purchase body cameras for security personnel to be used during the election to ensure transparency and accountability.
