Adilur Rahman Khan, Advisor to the Ministry of Industries and the Ministry of Housing & Public Works, has committed to implementing a road safety law in Bangladesh by 2027. He announced this initiative on February 19 during the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, taking place from February 18 to 20 in Marrakesh, Morocco.

The Bangladeshi government has already begun efforts toward this goal, which aligns with the National Road Safety Strategic Action Plan aimed at reducing road crash fatalities by 50% by 2030. The government emphasized the importance of ongoing actions to meet the 2030 targets, particularly Goals 3.6 and 11.2, recognizing the critical role of road safety in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 and 11.

As part of its commitments, Bangladesh plans to finalize and approve its first National Road Safety Law by 2027, developed under the Safe System Approach. Additionally, a central data-driven database system for collecting, storing, and analyzing road crash information will be established by 2026. A speed management guideline will also be introduced to ensure the effective implementation of the 2024 Motor Vehicle Speed Limit Guidelines, along with regulations for the use of standard helmets.

The conference saw participation from notable figures, including Dr. Mohammed Ziaul Haque, Additional Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division, and representatives from various governmental and private organizations in Bangladesh. Currently, Bangladesh lacks specific road safety laws, prompting the government to prioritize this issue.

Meanwhile, Marjana Muntaha and Abu Jafar represented youth initiatives at the Third World Youth Conference, where they discussed efforts to promote safer roads in Bangladesh.
