‘The best days of this county are just ahead of it’ – John May, Secretary General, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation United Kingdom came up with this remark at a discussion in Dhaka University (DU).
The Student Counseling and Guidance Office of DU organized the program at Sir Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building on Thursday to mark the 10th anniversary of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Foundation Bangladesh.
May also advised the Award Leaders (trainers) and said: “If the works you can do in developing the skills, behavior and attitudes of young people, place them in the position they deserve to be.”
John May added: “It (the award) can make a transformational difference to a young person’s life. On a collective basis, it has the power to bring significant change to wider society.”
While expressing fascination with the environment of Bangladesh he said: “This is my first time in Bangladesh. I have completely fallen in love with your country. It’s not just about the food which I have to tell you, some of the best in the world.”
“But it is the commitment of the teachers and friendliness and the welcome of the people that I have met. And what that means for me is the potential of the youth of Bangladesh is clearly yet to be realized,” May added.
The program was held in presence of Deans of Faculties, Directors of different wings, Chairpersons and Student Advisors of Departments, Provosts of Residential Halls, Award Coordinator, Award Leaders, distinguished teachers and other personnel on the occasion.
AK Shamsuddin Khan, Chairman, Board of Trustees of the foundation in Bangladesh chapter, considered the award as tool for “development of the whole human being by providing a unique rewarding agenda that fills the gap left by formal education”.
While addressing as Chief Guest, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman thanked the authorities of Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation for giving awards to DU students.
He said, “DU students have been highly benefited and encouraged by this program of Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation. This award program is playing an important role to develop communication and management skills as well as behavior and attitude of the students.”
On August 20, six national and multinational companies: AK Khan and Company Ltd, Concorde Garments Group, MM Ispahani Ltd, Standard Chartered Bank, Rangoonwala Foundation UK, GlaxoSmithKline Bangladesh and lately joined Bangladesh International Tutorial Ltd -altogether initiated the award.
Dhaka University is patronizing The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award since its inception in Bangladesh from 2008 and promote youth development altogether.
