News Desk :

Members of the local Nayan-Piyas gang have launched an ambush on a newly opened temporary police camp in Jamalpur village of Guagachia union in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj. During this, there was heavy gunfire between the two sides. Later, the attackers fled after being unable to withstand the police resistance.

The incident took place on Monday after 5 pm in the valley of the Meghna River adjacent to the police camp in Jamalpur village of Guagachia union of the upazila.

According to eyewitnesses, members of the Nayan-Piyas group of pirates started practicing in the river adjacent to the temporary police camp after 5:00 pm on Monday with 5/6 engine-powered trawlers. They first exploded 4/5 cocktails near the camp.

Later, the members of the bandit group started firing at the police camp from the trawler. The police also returned fire in self-defense. At that time, about 100 rounds were fired by the bandits and about 20 rounds by the police.

The gunfight between the two sides lasted for more than an hour. Unable to withstand the police resistance, the members of the robber gang fled towards Matlab with a trawler around 5:45 pm.

Gazaria Police Station OC Anwar Alam Azad told Kalbela that at least 30/35 sea robbers led by local robber Piyas, in 5/6 trawlers, started firing at the police camp. At that time, the terrorists exploded 4/5 cocktails. Later, they started firing at the police camp.

He further said, “As we were able to gauge the situation, we also adjusted our positions and started firing at the terrorists. About 24 rounds of firing were fired from our side. None of our police personnel were injured. However, I cannot say whether any terrorists were injured or not.”

Munshiganj Superintendent of Police Muhammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar said, “The boat robbers probably went down to the river to collect extortion. They could not facilitate the situation due to the presence of the police. There was an exchange of gunfire between the two sides. None of our police personnel was injured.”

He also said, “I don’t know if anyone was injured in the naval robbery. The police will take a tougher stance against the terrorists going forward.”

Incidentally, several boat robber groups are active in various points of Guagachia Union, a remote area of Gazaria Upazila. In the past few months, several people including bandit Sardar Babla, Shooter Mannan and Hridoy Bagh were killed by boat robbers Nayan-Piyas and Lalu Bahini for various reasons including operating illegal sand dunes, extortion on boats, and establishing dominance.

A temporary police camp was opened in Jamalpur village of the union on Friday (August 22) to reduce the activities of boat robbers in the area. Meanwhile, boat robber groups have been opposing the establishment of the temporary police camp from the beginning.
