Tension gripped Shahbagh’s Aziz Super Market in the capital yesterday afternoon after a dispute broke out over the formation of the market’s shop owners’ association committee.

Following Friday prayers, two rival groups of shop owners clashed verbally, escalating into a standoff that led to the entrances of the market being padlocked.

Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Mansur said the market was locked due to an ongoing conflict between two groups. “One group is in favour of holding an election among the shop owners, while the other wants to take control without an election,” he said.

Around noon, one faction padlocked the collapsible gates, leaving the market closed for several hours. Police later intervened and reopened the entrances in the afternoon, the OC added.
Business activities resumed after the reopening, but shopkeepers and visitors reported an uneasy atmosphere amid fears of further clashes if the leadership dispute remains unresolved.
