Teesta water overflows, floods hit Lalmonirhat

The water level of the Teesta River at Dalia point was flowing 5cm above danger level, inundating the low-lying areas including the standing crops in the Charlands of Teesta.

It is reported that water has entered 8-10 Chars and low-lying areas of six unions of Hatibandha upazila as the water level has inflated in Teesta River.

Assistant Engineer Nurul Islam said that the water level at Dalia point was flowing above 5cm. All the 44 sluice gates of Teesta Barrage were kept open for controlling water.

According to Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), in the Rangpur division, the water levels of the Teesta, Dhala, and Dudhkumari rivers increased over the past 24 hours.

Over the next 24 hours, the water levels of these rivers may rise further, and the Teesta River’s water level may flow above the danger level, while the Dhala and Dudhkumari rivers may exceed the danger level.

During this period, the low-lying areas along these rivers in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, and Kurigram districts may be inundated. However, on the 2nd and 3rd day, the water levels of these rivers may decrease.

FFWC said that the water levels of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river system increased over the past 24 hours. The water levels of these rivers may rise over the next 3 days and may flow at the warning level, while they may remain stable over the following 2 days.

The FFWC bulletin further said that the water levels of the Ganga and Padma rivers increased over the past 24 hours. The water level of the Ganga River may remain stable for the next 2 days but may decrease over the following 3 days.

On the other hand, the water level of the Padma River may rise over the next 3 days and may flow at the warning level. During this period, low-lying areas along these rivers in Rajbari, Faridpur, Pabna, Manikganj, Shariatpur, Madaripur, Munshiganj, and Dhaka districts may be temporarily inundated. However, on the 4th and 5th days, water levels may remain stable.
According to Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMW), a Low Pressure Area has formed over westcentral Bay and adjoining Northwest Bay off North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha coast at 06am on Wednesday. It is likely to intensify further. Monsoon is active northern part and fairly active elsewhere over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay.

According to BMW, light to moderate rain/thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at many places over Rangpur, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Rajshahi and Dhaka divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over the country on Thursday.

Executive Engineer of Water Development Board at Dalia Point Shunil Kumar said, “As the water level of Teesta River continues to increase, people living in low-lying areas have been advised to remain alert.”
