Bangladesh Tea Workers Union held a press conference rejecting 5 percent wage increase for the tea industry workers in a gazette published by the lowest wage branch of the Bangladesh Ministry of Labor and Employment.
Bangladesh Tea Workers Union General Secretary (Acting) Nipen Pal read the written statement at the press conference organized in the hall of the central office of the union on Tuesday. Bangladesh Tea Workers Union Vice President Pankaj Kand, Organizing Secretary Vijay Hazra, Treasurer Paresh Kalindi and others were present on the occasion.
Nipen Pal said in a written statement, “Bangladesh has a total of 230 tea gardens including main gardens and outpost gardens. At present around 102.92 crore kg of tea is being produced. Despite the increase in tea production, the number of permanent and casual workers has not increased much, the wages and benefits of the workers have not increased. Wage fixation of the tea workers continue after the British rule by the owners’ organizations BTA (Bangladesh Tea Association).
