Staff Reporter:

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for individual taxpayers to file their income tax returns for the 2025–26 tax year by one month, moving it to 31 December. The extension was announced in a special order issued Sunday.

In a separate directive, the NBR said that taxpayers facing difficulties with e-return system registration may apply to their respective excise commissioners by 15 December, providing valid reasons for their inability to file online.

This year, online return submission has been made mandatory for all individual taxpayers, except senior citizens aged 65 or above, persons with disabilities, Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad, legal representatives of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.

Although exempt, these groups may still opt to file their returns electronically.

Authorised representatives are also allowed to submit e-returns on behalf of taxpayers.

Bangladeshi expatriates can register for the e-return system by emailing their passport number, NID number, and email address to [email protected]. They will receive a registration link and OTP, enabling them to file online from overseas.

Taxpayers can file returns without attaching documents by simply inputting accurate details of income, expenses, assets, and liabilities. Payments can be made digitally through debit or credit cards, internet banking, or mobile financial services such as bKash and Nagad. Once submitted, the system automatically generates both the acknowledgement slip and the tax certificate, making e-filing increasingly popular at home and abroad.

To make the process easier, the NBR has continued its training initiative this year, offering guidance to taxpayers as well as income tax lawyers, chartered accountants, cost and management accountants, and chartered secretaries.

A dedicated call centre has also been set up to assist with e-return issues. Taxpayers can receive immediate support by calling 09643 71 71 71.
