BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas on Saturday said the return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman signals the restoration of democracy in the country.
“The democracy founded by Ziaur Rahman and nurtured by Khaleda Zia is now being brought back by Tarique Rahman,” he said while speaking at a preparatory meeting in the capital’s Gopibagh area ahead of Tarique Rahman’s homecoming.
Condemning the vandalism and arson attacks on Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, Mirza Abbas said anti-democratic forces cannot withstand the power of democracy. “Those involved in conspiracies should be cautious.
The attackers who set fire to institutions like Prothom Alo and The Daily Star are enemies of the nation, and they must be stopped,” he said.
He also criticised the government, saying BNP had repeatedly expressed its willingness to cooperate. “Instead of working together, the government is aligning itself with the enemies of the country.
When arson, terrorism and mob violence are taking place, where are the law enforcement agencies? Rather than taking action, there is a baseless attempt to blame BNP,” he alleged.
Mirza Abbas demanded immediate action against those responsible for mob violence.
“BNP is the protector of democracy, not its destroyer. We do not engage in politics of murder, mob attacks or enforced disappearances. However, that does not mean we will remain silent or inactive,” he said.
