Marking World Environment Day 2025, the BNP has announced a five-point environmental action plan, including the launch of a National Green Recovery Plan, which it pledges to implement if elected to power in the next national election.
The announcement was made by the party’s Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, through a post on his official Facebook profile on Wednesday.
“I am encouraged to see Bangladesh observing World Environment Day 2025 through a range of meaningful programs and initiatives,” Tarique wrote. “At a time when unrestrained industrialisation and haphazard development continue to endanger ecosystems worldwide, this day provides an important opportunity to raise awareness about the urgent need for environmental protection and sustainable living.”
Highlighting the mounting climate crisis and the growing threat of industrial pollution, he stressed the need for a pragmatic and forward-looking national strategy. Should the BNP return to office, the party pledges to undertake the following initiatives to protect the country’s environment:
Formulate a National Green Recovery Plan focused on mass reforestation (with a target of planting 250 to 300 million trees over five years), the promotion of renewable energy, and environmentally sustainable agriculture. Prohibit the use of harmful plastics and toxic chemicals, while encouraging the widespread adoption of biodegradable alternatives in both industry and domestic life.
Implement a nationwide dredging and restoration program for rivers and canals to alleviate waterlogging and restore aquatic ecosystems.
Invest in climate-resilient agriculture and infrastructure in vulnerable southern regions, helping communities adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Incorporate environmental education into the national curriculum to foster a generation of environmentally conscious citizens.
Tarique also praised Bangladesh’s natural beauty and ecological richness, stating: “It is our solemn responsibility to safeguard this precious environment for future generations.”
He emphasized that environmental consciousness has always been integral to the BNP’s philosophy. Over the years, the party has led various efforts including large-scale tree plantation drives, excavation and maintenance of canals, and active campaigns against the use of harmful plastics.
Referring to his father and BNP founder, Tarique recalled: “In 1977, President Ziaur Rahman initiated the Environment Pollution Control Project, which eventually developed into today’s Department of Environment.”
He further noted that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia continued this legacy by introducing the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act in 1995 and establishing the nation’s first Environmental Courts-pioneering legal frameworks for environmental protection.
