BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to return to Bangladesh in December once the schedule for the upcoming national election is officially declared, the party’s foreign affairs adviser Humayun Kabir confirmed while speaking to journalists in Sylhet on Thursday.

Kabir indicated that Tarique may contest multiple constituencies in the 13th parliamentary election and emphasized that preparations for his return, particularly concerning security, are being taken seriously.

He also disclosed that US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Tracey Ann Jacobson, met Tarique in London on July 13 in a closed-door meeting.

Though framed as a courtesy call, discussions reportedly included the current political landscape in Bangladesh, BNP’s vision for state governance, and plans for forming the next government should the party win.

“Tarique Rahman shared his views on the electoral process and governance priorities under a BNP-led administration,” Kabir said, noting growing international interest in the party’s activities.

Tarique has been in self-imposed exile in London since 2008, having left the country after being granted bail following his 2007 arrest during the caretaker government regime.

Despite legal and security challenges, Kabir said Tarique is now determined to return between in December to lead BNP’s election campaign from the frontlines.

Speaking to journalists, Kabir reiterated, “He will return immediately after the announcement of the 13th parliamentary election schedule. Though security risks persist, the decision is firm.”

Kabir also stated that there are currently no legal impediments preventing Tarique from running in the election. He added that, if BNP wins, Tarique Rahman will assume the role of prime minister.

Meanwhile, Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd) Abul Fazl Md Sanaullah said on Thursday that the election schedule is expected in the first half of December.

“We have been advised to ensure that the election is held before Ramadan begins in February,” he noted, adding that the announcement will come about two months prior to polling day.
