NN Online:
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday strongly criticised the government’s silence and apparent inaction regarding the brutal killing of a scrap trader in front of Mitford Hospital, questioning whether the perpetrators—clearly seen in video footage—are being protected by state actors.
“We clearly saw the attackers on video, yet no arrests have been made. Should we assume this mob violence is being silently supported or tolerated by the interim government or some officials?” Tarique asked during a virtual event with families of the 142 martyrs of the July mass uprising.
He reaffirmed BNP’s stance on justice: “A criminal is a criminal, regardless of party identity. Justice must be served under the law.”
Tarique said people across the country are demanding answers as to why the authorities remain silent and fail to take swift legal action. “We are monitoring those attempting to destabilize the environment and spread unrest,” he warned.
The event, organised by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, marked the first anniversary of the July-August 2024 mass uprising. Held at a Dhaka hotel, the emotional gathering featured tributes from families of those killed during last year’s democratic movement.
Several families shared their grief and demanded justice for their lost loved ones. Tarique urged them to continue speaking out and hold the government accountable for delays in trials.
He also cautioned against efforts to manipulate public sentiment and delay justice through orchestrated mob violence.
“If the BNP returns to power with the people’s mandate, we will prioritise the trial and punishment of those responsible for killing innocent people in the name of suppressing democratic movements,” he pledged.
