BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Monday urged the interim government to swiftly conduct relief and rescue operations in the flood-affected areas of the country’s north, side-by-side with necessary measures to prevent river erosion.
He also called upon the leaders and workers of BNP and its affiliated organizations to extend their full support to the flood- affected people.
The BNP acting Chairman made the remarks in a statement.
“Large areas of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram, and Gaibandha districts along the Teesta River have been inundated by flash floods due to heavy rains and the onrush of water from upstream,” the BNP acting Chairman said.
He said the water level of rivers in the northern region, including the Teesta, are flowing above the danger level.
Tarique Rahman expressed the concern that many people have already become marooned due to this sudden flooding.
He lamented the fact that the flood-affected people are enduring severe hardship, with uneasiness and fear prevailing in the area, as roads and crops remain submerged.
“I urge all leaders, workers, and supporters of the BNP and its affiliated organizations in the flood-affected areas and surrounding districts to actively assist the flood victims in every possible way,” Tarique stated.
“At the same time, I call on the interim government to promptly conduct relief and rescue operations in the affected areas and to implement effective measures to prevent riverbank erosion,” he concluded.
