BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has cautioned that Bangladesh must never be allowed to turn into a haven for extremism or fundamentalism.
“Our expectation is that this country will never become a breeding ground for extremism or fundamentalism,” he said while virtually addressing a views-exchange meeting at the National Press Club on Sunday.
The programme, titled “The role and responsibilities of poets and writers in the transition to democracy” and organised by the BNP, highlighted his call for national unity.
Tarique stressed, “All citizens are equal stakeholders of this nation, and to establish this principle, we must unite to protect the right to vote, ensure freedom of speech, and guarantee a free and fair election.”
Speaking to poets and writers present at the event, he added, “Your unwavering commitment to independence, sovereignty, and democracy is no different from ours. Political ideologies may vary, but that does not divide us – our common ground is the shared faith in the nation’s sovereignty.”
He further underlined the vital contribution of poets and writers in society, noting that they have long served as the voice of the unspoken sentiments of ordinary people.
