Tannery workers protested in Hemayetpur, Savar, on Saturday, demanding the government implement the announced wages.
Tannery workers staged a protest rally in the leather industry city. The Tannery Workers Union on Saturday under the initiative and presided over by the union president Md. Abul Kalam Azad.
The rally was held in front of the Tannery Workers Union office.
Hundreds of tannery workers, both men and women, gathered in separate processions from the factory for the rally.
Speakers at the rally said that the Ministry of Labor and Employment has announced that on November 21, 2024, Grade-1, 34,168/, Grade-2, 28,388/, Grade-3, 24,002/, Grade-4, 20,993/ and Grade-5, 18,001/ will be paid to tannery workers.
The gazette announces minimum wages in five grades, which are to come into effect immediately.
But the employer side did not implement the new wage structure, disobeying the government’s instructions.

5 grades have been determined. Which the government will send a letter to the owner from November 21, 2024.
Even though they asked for implementation, the owners have not implemented it till date. He said, “The main slogan of the July Revolution was the student movement against discrimination.
The workers are the biggest victims of discrimination. We have not received it before. At this time, we request those who are now coming to power by protesting against discrimination, those who are disobeying the laws you have made, the laws given by the government, those who are the victims of discrimination, we have come to the field, if they take any decision and stop work in the area, then the Tannery Workers Union and the workers cannot be held responsible.” At that time, the organization’s general secretary Abdul Malek and worker leader KM Leyakat Hossain, along with other worker leaders and worker representatives of various tanneries, spoke at the rally.
Workers will not be allowed to do any additional work outside of the general work schedule through the work schedule announcement.
