Taiyeb seeks France coop in fact checking training

Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb on Tuesday sought cooperation from France saying fact checking is an important issue and Bangladeshi fact checkers needs cooperation in advanced level training.
“A national framework is being developed to tackle election-related misinformation/disinformation and various agencies including law enforcement agencies are working together in this regard. In this case, fact checking is an important issue, so we need cooperation of advanced level training of Bangladeshi fact checkers from France,” he said.
He said these at a meeting with France Ambassador to Dhaka Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet held in the office of the Special Assistant in the Posts and Telecommunication Division at Secretariat.
Faiz Ahmad said that the Bangladesh government is creating various laws and technology-based administrative structures including cyber security law, personal information protection law, digital citizen identity and e-payment system, and with the help of Estonia, work is also underway on digital eco system and data interoperability, reports BSS.
The Special Assistant also commented that France’s cooperation is needed in the use of satellite images and increasing the capacity of technology-based services.
The France envoy said that Bangladesh and France believe in democratic values. Bangladesh is of particular importance to France because of its active role in the Pacific region, he added.
He said French universities and engineering schools are government subsidized so tuition is relatively cheap.
He also commented that it is a good opportunity for Bangladeshi students to study in France.
The ambassador also said that France’s space agency and research institutes are keen to provide imagery and academic support free of charge.
In the meeting, there were extensive discussions on digital cooperation between the two countries, cyber security, progress in the telecommunication sector and future action plans.
Both sides expressed their hope for closer cooperation in the future.
Economic Counselor of the French Embassy Julien Diu attended the meeting.
