BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday alleged that a vested quarter is ‘dangerously conspiring’ to obstruct Bangladesh’s democratic transition process.
“Bangladesh is now going through a transition period. A brutal fascist rule destroyed our values, democratic institutions and the economy,” he said while speaking at a press conference at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office.
After emerging from that fascist rule, the BNP leader said the nation is now moving towards an election, with the expectation that an elected government and an elected parliament will guide the country and the people in the right direction. “But in the meantime, it is clear that a small group and a vested quarter are dangerously conspiring to disrupt this transition process,” he said.
Fakhrul said Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi was killed as part of that conspiracy, and prayed for the salvation of his departed soul. “I once again pray for the forgiveness of the martyred Osman Bin Hadi and ask the Almighty Allah to grant him the highest place in Jannah,” he said. At the press conference, Fakhrul announced that BNP will share four parliamentary seats—Nilphamari-1, Narayanganj-4, Sylhet-5 and Brahmanbaria-2—with its alliance partner Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh for the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election.
Speaking about the law and order situation, Fakhrul said it has deteriorated significantly due to the failure of the interim government during the transition period. “We expected that the government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus would at least show its capability during these few months and run the country efficiently,” he said.
The BNP leader thanked the interim government for announcing the election date on February 12, 2026, saying the Election Commission is moving forward accordingly.
He, however, said the government needs to be more alert and play a more positive and effective role in creating a proper election environment. “We hope they will focus more on ensuring that the election is held in a truly free and fair atmosphere.” Replying to a question, Fakhrul said seat-sharing arrangements with their alliance partners have already been finalised.
“Our understanding with alliance partners has been completed, and our bond with them has become even stronger,” he said. Asked about how many seats will be shared with alliance partners, he said the party will disclose the details in due course.
