As part of a symbolic protest, activists of Islami Shasantantra Chhatra Andolan (ISCA) presented radishes at the office of the Vice-Chancellor of Barishal University (BU). Around 1 pm on Thursday, several members of the organisation walked into the VC’s office carrying radishes and handed them over to the authorities to be delivered to the Vice-Chancellor.
Speaking to journalists, leaders of the organisation said the university administration has repeatedly failed to honour its commitments to the students. In their words, “We keep receiving assurances, but nothing is being implemented, only dangling radishes in front of us.”
Hasibur Rahman, president of Islami Shasantantra Chhatra Andolan said,“The university administration has been unable to prepare the sports field for the past seven to eight months. There has been no conclusive understanding with departments regarding the ‘HEAT project’. There is no resolution concerning student promotion issues. Employees salaries remain unpaid. The administration continues to procrastinate over the student union election. They only make promises none are carried out. That is why, as a symbolic protest, we have presented radishes at the VC’s office today.”
Mehedi Hasan, the organisation’s publicity secretary said,“Various crises have persisted on campus for a long time, yet we have not seen any effective solutions. The administration keeps giving assurances these promises have now effectively turned into ‘radishes’. We are exhausted from taking this over and over again.”
It is worth noting that Barishal University has long been plagued by multiple unresolved issues, shortage of residential halls, insufficient classrooms, lack of renovation of the central playground, unpaid staff salaries, and complexities in the teacher promotion process, among others.
