Sylhet Bureau :

Flood situation has worsened in Sylhet and Sunamganj for the second time. Surma River water is flowing 32 cm above the danger level. Four districts are now flood-affected in Sylhet division where the HSC candidates are not relieved despite delaying the HSC examination.

Houses and roads have been destroyed by floods. As there is still water in the exam center, their parents are seeing it as a big challenge to participate in the exam and get good results.

According to Shah Md. Sajib Hossain, an assistant meteorologist, Sylhet recorded 294 mm of rainfall from 6am Monday through 6am on Tuesday. India’s Cherrapunji recorded 645mm of rain in the last three days, said Deepak Ranjan Das, the executive engineer of the Sylhet Water Development Board.

However, the amount of rainfall has decreased in the last 24 hours. “If the rainfall increases, the flooding will worsen in Sylhet. It is already raining in Sylhet. The rivers are flowing over their warning levels,” said Deepak.

On Tuesday morning, knee-deep waters could be seen in several areas of the city including Jatarpur, Subhanighat, Machimpur and Uposhahar. While some locals wade through the waterlogged roads, others are commuting by rickshaw, private car or autorickshaw.

Shamim Ikbal, a resident of Uposhahar area Said: “On Monday night, knee-deep waters inundated my house. Everyone struggled throughout the night.

In the morning, I had to wade through inundated streets to go out. It was the same on the way back. Most of the streets of the area are waterlogged.”

Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) of Sylhet Mohammad Mubarak Hossain said: “The water in the rivers has risen due to the incessant rainfall in the past two days. But the overall situation is still under our control. The executive officers of the Upazilas are working.

We are distributing relief and aid among those affected.”

The water levels have also risen in the Fenchuganj, Balaganj, Osmaninagar, and Bishwanath areas, Mubarak said.
“People are coming to the shelters again due to the rise in water levels,” he added.

Along with that, the rural roads, houses and fossil lands of Tahirpur, Dowarabazar and Chhatak upazilas in Sunamganj district have been submerged in the water due to the rains and mountain streams coming down from the upstream.

Millions of people have suffered due to waterlogging. On Tuesday (July 2) at 6 am, the water of Surma River flowed 32 cm above the flood line at Sholaghar point in Sunamganj town.

The people of this region have suffered greatly as Sunamganj has been hit by floods twice in a span of one month. 950 people have taken shelter in 200 shelter centers in the district.

The victims said that a few days ago we already faced a severe flood, but now our situation has worsened due to the flood situation again.

A resident of Tahirpur upazila said that our condition is very bad due to flood water. Water is constantly rising. The road has already sunk. Water enters in the house.

Sunamganj Water Development Board Executive Engineer Mamun Howladar said, due to rain in Sunamganj and Cherrapunji in India, the water of Surma and Jadukata rivers flowing over the boundary.

Moderate to heavy rain is likely to continue for one more day. This may cause short-term flood situation.

Meanwhile, incessant rainfall and an onrush of runoff from upstream have battered the Sylhet Division again, flooding low-lying areas and inundating the city.
