Sylhet suffers as 1,176 villages inundated

Waters of the rivers of the Sylhet region have again swollen due to the heavy rainfall and onrush of upstream waters, submerging parts of the districts of Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Sunamganj.Waters of the Surma, Kushiyara and Shari-Goyain rivers were above the danger level in at least six points, causing flooding in the region for the third time this year with hundreds of thousands of people marooned.
Many of the flood-hit families, who had returned home from shelters, are now moving back to the safe spots as the overflowing Surma, Kushiyara, Manu, and Khowai rivers have inundated many areas of Moulvibazar, Sunamganj, and Habiganj.
1,176 villages of 97 unions of the district have been inundated by the third round of floods in Sylhet. 7 lakh 1 thousand 658 people are trapped in water. Besides, the lower areas of Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Netrakona, and Sherpur have been flooded. 11 places river dams in Tilagaon, Hajipur, and Sharifpur Unions are at risk due to the increase in Manu river water.
According to Divisional Commissioner’s Office in Sylhet, over 16,000 people have been relocated to 898 shelter centres across the division.
