Sylhet Bureau :
Jamaat’s Central Assistant Secretary General Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair said that the July 24th mass uprising was the highest achievement for the nation after independence. For this achievement, 2,000 students and people have given their lives and 30,000 people have been injured. The nation will not wait for the next government to pay this blood debt. The national elections will be held in February next year. Before that, the legal basis of the July Charter must be given. This demand is not only of Jamaat, but of the patriotic people. Therefore, the interim government must organize national elections on the basis of the July Charter.
He said, “We are being told that we do not want elections because we have made 5-point demands, including the legal basis of the July Charter and elections under the PR system. However, a year ago, we nominated candidates for 200 seats. More than 10 candidates are working in one seat of a major party here. If a candidate declares, World War III will start. Some do not understand PR. They will understand this too in time. Like the caretaker system, the PR system will also be effective and acceptable in this country. Accept the 5-point demands announced by Jamaat, including the legal basis of the July Charter. Otherwise, the mass movement will start again.”
He made the above remarks as the chief guest at a short pre-march rally organized by the Sylhet Metropolitan Jamaat as part of the protest program announced by the Jamaat center at Court Point in the city on Friday (October 10) after Jumma.
After the protest rally, a huge mass procession was taken out from Court Point with 5-point demands including the legal basis of the July Charter and elections under the PR system. The procession circled important points of the city and ended at Chowhatta Point. Thousands of people from Sylhet Metropolitan and various police stations-wards-units participated in the procession.
Jamaat’s Central Working Committee member and Sylhet Metropolitan Ameer Muhammad Fakhrul Islam presided over the short pre-march rally jointly conducted by Assistant Secretary Zahedur Rahman Chowdhury and Maulana Islam Uddin. Special guests included Maulana Habibur Rahman, Jamaat’s Central Majlish-e-Shura member, Sylhet District Ameer and Jamaat-nominated MP candidate for Sylhet-1 constituency (Metropolitan and Sadar).
Speakers included Professor Abdul Hannan, District Nayeb-e-Ameer, Jamaat-nominated MP candidate for Sylhet-2 constituency, and Metropolitan Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr. Nurul Islam Babul, Jamaat-nominated MP candidate from Sylhet-3 constituency and former South Surma Upazila Chairman Maulana Lokman Ahmed, Bangladesh Workers Welfare Federation Sylhet Metropolitan President Advocate Jamil Ahmed Raju, Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir Sylhet Metropolitan President Shahin Ahmed and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Chhatra Shibir President Tarek Monowar, etc.
In his speech as the chief guest, Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair also said that the current interim government has formed a consensus commission to reform the state system. That commission has been continuously exchanging views with 33 political parties for 8 months. Out of the many proposals of the commission, the political parties have agreed on 84 proposals. In addition, everyone has also agreed on the promulgation of the July Ordinance proposed by Jamaat in the constitution. For this, a referendum has been decided. The interim government should organize a referendum as soon as possible.
Party leaders and activists from various upazilas including Sylhet metropolis joined the mass procession and rally organized by the Metropolitan Jamaat.
