In order to increase fish production, high-quality fry are needed. But due to the disruption of the natural reproduction of fish due to various reasons including filling of water bodies, environmental pollution, the number of high-quality fry that could be obtained naturally is decreasing. Therefore, emphasis should be placed on artificial reproduction in fry production. More projects will be taken up in Sylhet for the development of fry production and fisheries resources.
Director General of the Department of Fisheries Dr. Md. Abdur Rouf said these things while speaking as the chief guest at the district-level regional workshop under the Infrastructure Development Project (Phase 1) to increase the capacity of existing government fish farms and fish production held in Sylhet on Saturday.
The workshop was organized by the Sylhet District Fisheries Officer’s office and was held at the conference hall of Nirvana Inn Complex in Mirzajangal, with the participation of fish farmers and entrepreneurs from different levels of the district.
The workshop was chaired by Sylhet Division Fisheries Director Md. Asadul Baki.
Director General of the Fisheries Department Dr. Md. Abdur Rouf attended the programme as a chief guest.
Deputy Director of the Fisheries Department of Sylhet Division Md. Ashrafuzzaman attend the workshop as special guest.
The main paper was presented at the workshop by the Project Director of the Infrastructure Development Project (Phase 1) to increase the capacity and fish production of existing government fish farms.
Md. Mashiur Rahman. Sylhet District Fisheries Officer Seema Rani Biswas delivered the welcome speech at the workshop.
At the beginning of the workshop, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of the martyrs of the July Uprising.
In his speech as the chief guest, the Director General of the Department of Fisheries also said that the government-built fish farms in the 1950s and 1960s need to be renovated. Along with good fish farming management, it is possible to revolutionize this sector by modernizing fish farming by utilizing technology in line with the times. He also emphasized on combating the effects of climate change to protect fish resources. He assured the fish farmers of the district who attended the workshop of practical solutions to various problems.
Other speakers at the workshop expressed hope that this project, which will run from July 2024 to June 2028, i.e., four years, will be successful with the efforts of everyone under the leadership of the Department of Fisheries. Among others, fisheries officers, employees at various levels of Sylhet district and representatives of print and electronic media were present at the workshop.
