S A Shofiee, Sylhet :
A fuel oil crisis has arisen at Sylhet petrol pumps. Pump owners are not getting half of the oil they need. As a result, many fear that customers will suffer at Sylhet pumps. Owners and consumers are in trouble due to the fuel oil crisis during the Boro season.
It is known that fuel oil comes to Sylhet from Chittagong. Fuel is brought to Sylhet by train in wagons. After collecting it from the depot, traders of the Petrol Pump Owners Association sell it in the market. But where Oil supply from Kailashtila in the Sylhet field has been stopped for 4 years. In this situation, oil is brought from Bhairab and Ashuganj in Sylhet to overcome the crisis. This is not profitable, on the contrary, subsidies are being paid.
According to sources from the Sylhet Division Petrol Pump and Owners Association, there are 114 petrol pumps in 4 districts of Sylhet division. Of these, 60 pumps are in Sylhet district and city. The daily demand for petrol, octane and diesel in these pumps is more than 1 million liters. It is known that all petrol pumps collect fuel oil from Chittagong. Sylhet’s oil supply is wagon-dependent. Therefore, the pumps often face such a situation due to the wagon shortage. Above all, the production of fuel oil from condensate extracted from the mines of Sylhet’s gas fields has been stopped for 4 years, and this crisis is becoming more acute day by day.
