A meeting of judicial officers
was held in Sylhet at the initiative of Bangladesh Judicial Service Association with the participation of judicial officers of Sylhet division.
An important discussion was held on the interests and challenges of the judiciary in this meeting organized at the Sylhet Chief Judicial Magistrate Court building on Friday.
The meeting was presided over by Bangladesh Judicial Service Association President and learned Judge (District and Sessions Judge) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Md. Amirul Islam. Senior District and Sessions Judge of Sunamganj district Hemayet Uddin was present as the chief guest.
The speakers in the discussion highlighted the essential role of the judiciary in establishing law and discussed in detail the existing obstacles such as infrastructural limitations, administrative interference and budget deficit.
The speakers said that since the executive branch has the power to appoint, transfer, promote and discipline district court judges, the judiciary often faces undue influence, which is against judicial independence. In this context, the speakers demanded that the Supreme Court be entrusted with the responsibility of administrative matters of judges and that an independent ‘Judicial Secretariat’ be formed.
The speakers also said that it is possible to increase the effectiveness of the judicial system through structural development of the judiciary and increasing budget allocation. They believed that the association would play an effective role in protecting the interests of judges as a pressure group.
The judges participating in the meeting called for the modernization of the judiciary and urged the current interim government to take urgent steps to increase the independence and capacity of the judiciary.
Learned judges of different levels from four districts of Sylhet division participated in the meeting spontaneously and expressed their sincere congratulations to the leadership of the association.
