Sylhet celebrates International Day for Disaster Reduction

International Day for Disaster Reduction was observed in Sylhet on Sunday.
On the occasion of the celebration of the International Day for Disaster Reduction-2024, a discussion meeting was held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner Sylhet organised by the Sylhet district administration.
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad attended the programme as chief guest.
He said that Bangladesh is a disaster-prone country. Every year there is a huge loss of life due to some calamities. If effective measures are taken before the disaster strikes based on early warning, it is possible to reduce the potential damage of the disaster to a large extent.
He said that the awareness of the people and related parties should be increased to reduce the risk of disaster. The current interim government is working for this.
This year’s Disaster Mitigation Day is being celebrated with the theme of ‘Empowering the next generation, building a disaster resilient future’. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Mohammad Mobarak Hossain presided over the Sylhet District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Abdul Kuddus bulbul gave a welcome speech on the occasion.
Subarna Sarkar, Deputy Director of Local Government Sylhet, journalist and columnist Aftab Chowdhury, prominent social worker and organizer Jamil Chowdhury, Fire Service and Civil Defense Sylhet Senior Station Officer Md. Belal Hossain, Youth Head of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Chowdhury Lavib Yashir, Project Manager (FIVDB) Farhana Akhtar, District Coordinator (BRAC) Md. Anik Ahmed, Deputy Assistant Meteorologist. Abdul Moeed, Community Volunteer of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Sylhet Md Liton Ahmed and others Also spoke in the discussion meeting.
Sylhet Sadar Upazila Project Implementation Officer Muhammad Hiron conducted the program.
After the discussion meeting, a fire and earthquake drill was held under the management of Fire Service and Civil Defense Sylhet in order to increase public awareness in the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
