Syedur Rahman of South Surma Upazila in Sylhet district has made a remarkable achievement by successfully cultivating yellow and purple cauliflower. His colorful cauliflower has attracted significant attention, with buyers visiting daily to see and purchase the vibrant vegetables.
He is a well-known farmer in Sylhet who cultivates new vegetables every year and creates a response in the entire area. Last year, he achieved great success by cultivating 12 brinjals and sweet potatoes. In continuation of that, he has cultivated colorful cauliflower this time.
Successful vegetable grower Syedur Rahman, a resident of Mandirkhla village of Mollargaon Union of the upazila, inspired by the overall cooperation and officials of the South Surma Upazila Agricultural Extension Department, planted colorful cauliflower for the first time on 10 bighas of land. The names of the two colorful cauliflowers are also beautiful. The pink cauliflower is called “Valentina” and the yellow cauliflower is called “Carotina.”
During the on-site inspection, it was seen that farmer Syedur is tending to the cauliflower plants in the southern part of his house in Mandirkhala village. Many more have come to visit his beautiful cauliflower field. Some are buying it from the field, while others are taking pictures.
During the conversation, he said, “When I was cultivating cauliflower in my land; then other farmers in the area were asking if I could sell this cauliflower? I was determined that I could sell it in the market. I cultivated it with that hope and got a good response. Every day, buyers come to the land to buy cauliflower. I cultivated this cauliflower myself because it is less difficult to cultivate, which also reduced the cost.”
Along with the two varieties of cauliflower, he has cultivated broccoli. He also has 12 bari brinjals.
Regarding the method of cultivating the two varieties of cauliflower, he said, “Valentina and Carotina varieties of cauliflower need to be cared for like normal cauliflower. Although this time we are doing experimental cultivation, we intend to cultivate more in the future.”
Dakshin Surma Upazila Executive Officer Urmi Roy, Upazila Agriculture Officer Gautam Pal and many other concerned officials have already visited his cauliflower field. Many have also taken advice on cultivation.
The Upazila Agriculture Office said these two varieties of colored cauliflower have more nutritional value than white cauliflower. They are also beautiful to look at. The market price of colored cauliflower is higher than the traditional white cauliflower.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Goutum Pal said, “For the second time, farmer Saidur has obtained good yields in cultivating colorful cauliflower in Dakshin Surma. His cultivation of cauliflower has created interest among other farmers.
“Many have become interested in cultivating colored cauliflower. Where ordinary cauliflower is sold for Tk 20-30, this one is being sold for Tk 60-70. Many farmers said in the future, hoping to make more profit, they will cultivate such cauliflower.”
Dakshin Surma Upazila Nirbahi Officer Urmi Roy said, “Syedur Rahman’s colorful cauliflower is actually very beautiful to look at. This exceptional initiative of his will encourage others along with his own economic development. He sought the cooperation of the concerned authorities to further accelerate his agricultural development efforts.”
