NN Online:
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) is set to launch 13 new academic departments aimed at fostering national development and producing a skilled, future-ready workforce.

The proposed departments include Aeronautical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Materials Engineering, Law, Aviation, and Al-Quran and Islamic Studies, among others.

Professor Dr. Md. Sajedul Karim, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of SUST, confirmed the development on Wednesday. He said the Academic Council has already approved the plan, which aligns with global academic trends and the evolving needs of the nation.

“These departments will be introduced gradually, pending final approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC),” he added.

SUST currently runs 27 departments under six faculties. Aside from the recent addition of the Oceanography Department, no new departments have been introduced in the past 17 years.

To support the academic expansion, the university is also upgrading its infrastructure—constructing new academic buildings, dormitories, mosques, and residential facilities.

The initiative is expected to transform SUST into a more comprehensive and modern institution, addressing the long-standing academic aspirations of the Sylhet region. The new departments are planned to begin operations in the 2026–27 academic year, subject to UGC approval.
