Since Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down as Bangladesh’s T20 captain last December, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has yet to begin the process of appointing a new skipper.
However, discussions are ongoing, with several experienced players, including Litton Das and Taskin Ahmed, being considered. Among them, pacer Taskin has emerged as one of the leading candidates.
Although Taskin doesn’t have much leadership experience, former Bangladesh captain and BCB director Khaled Mahmud Sujon expressed confidence in Taskin’s leadership abilities.
Speaking to the media today (Saturday) at Mirpur, Sujon said, “Wasim Akram, Imran Khan, Ian Botham – they all led their teams successfully. Although they were all-rounders, it’s wrong to say that pace bowlers can’t be captains.”
“If Taskin suffers an injury and can’t continue as captain, a vice-captain will be there to take over. It’s ultimately a board decision. Saying that fast bowlers can’t captain a team is simply wrong.
What’s important is knowledge and leadership qualities. Whether Taskin has those materials for captaincy – that’s what matters.” Sujon further added,
Wicketkeeper-batter Litton is also among the potential candidates.
On Liton’s prospects, Sujon commented, “First, the board needs to decide whether Litton will return to the team. If he isn’t in the squad, how can he be given the captaincy? But I believe Litton is still one of Bangladesh’s top batters. Everyone goes through tough phases.”
