Students of Sir Salimullah Medical College (SSMC) in Dhaka have declared a ‘shutdown’ of their institution, demanding immediate and effective measures to ensure security on the hospital premises.
The announcement came on Sunday afternoon during a protest march that started from the medical college campus.

The students said they would maintain the shutdown until concrete steps are taken to guarantee safety within the hospital compound.
They also demanded strict control over the entry of outsiders, the removal of illegal footpath vendors, and greater deployment and vigilance by the Ansar security forces.

Meanwhile, intern doctors at Mitford Hospital have observed a one-day work stoppage, also protesting the deteriorating security situation inside the hospital compound.

The protests erupted after the brutal murder of scrap metal trader Lal Chand alias Sohag in front of Gate No-3 of the hospital on 9 July.
The broad daylight killing sent shockwaves through the campus and surrounding areas, triggering widespread fear and unrest.

Students of Sir Salimullah Medical College, along with people across the country, have already staged demonstrations demanding justice for the horrific murder and swift action to prevent such incidents in the future.
