NN Online:
Students from the Seven Colleges have concluded Tuesday’s programme after announcing a road blockade on Wednesday at 9am, demanding a separate university. They vacated the Science Laboratory intersection in the capital after 5pm.
To press their demands, the students blocked the important intersection from 12pm to 5pm on Tuesday. As a result, traffic was halted for five hours at the Science Laboratory intersection, leading to significant congestion on nearby roads, including the Mirpur Road. Many people faced considerable difficulties due to the traffic jams.
After concluding Tuesday’s programme, the spokesperson for the protesters, Abdur Rahman, told reporters that a “University Transformation Commission” must be established to create an independent public university.
He said, “Our movement will continue until this commission is formed. As part of our protest, we plan to block the road again on Wednesday from 9am to 5pm. We will provide updates later if the government reaches out during this time.”
The protesting students said last Saturday they demanded the formation of a “University Transformation Commission” within three days. They warned of a more intense movement if their demands were not met by the deadline, which passed on Monday. In light of this situation, they took to the streets on Tuesday.
