DU Correspondent :

Female students from various institutions, including Dhaka University (DU), formed a human chain at DU on Friday to protest the rape of an intern doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital.

The human chain, held at the premises of Raju Sculpture Memorial at DU, saw protesters demanding justice for the deceased Moumita and calling for the resignation of Mamata Banerjee.

The protesters marched towards Shaheed Minar under the banner “Raise Your Voice, Women” and later staged a sit-in at the Raju Sculpture.

At the rally, the students voiced their outrage, stating that after the rape incident, all kinds of evidence were destroyed within the medical college. They demanded justice for women, law enforcement, and the upholding of women’s rights.

Aleya Tahmim, a student of the Department of Anthropology at DU, said, “It is ironic that we are criticizing India while standing in Bangladesh today.

In India, there is at least partial independence of the judiciary and the police to try rape cases impartially. But for the last fifteen years, there has been no such independence of the police or judiciary in our country.

The previous ruling government sheltered rapists rather than prosecuting them.”
Lamisha Jamal, a student of Jahangirnagar University, added, “The incidents of rape are so high in our country that it is difficult to remember them all together.”
