In a shocking incident in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, two individuals, including a police officer, were detained and brutally beaten by students who mistook them for mobile phone thieves. The incident occurred at Sanarpur bus stand on Sunday. The local police confirmed the incident, with Siddhirganj Thana’s Investigation Officer, Abu Said Pial, providing details.
The arrested individuals were identified as Police Constable Abu Noor Shafiuzzaman (55), son of the late Sharafat Ali from the village of Borohashimpur in Chirirbandar, Dinajpur, and Md. Raju (45), a resident of Nazirpur village in Muladi, Barishal, who currently lives in Rampura, Dhaka.
Police Constable Abu Noor Shafiuzzaman explained that he had been working at the Kalabagan police station in Dhaka but was recently reassigned to the police lines and had not yet been posted to a new station.
He had come to Siddhirganj to visit a relative with his friend, Md. Raju.
According to Shafiuzzaman, while they were at the Sanarpur bus stand preparing to return to Dhaka, a person snatched his mobile phone. He immediately caught the thief, but as he did, 2-3 others intervened and began arguing with him. When he identified himself as a police officer, the group began shouting, calling him a thief instead. At that moment, several students arrived at the scene and, without asking any questions, started to beat both him and his friend. The students did not listen to his explanation, as they mistakenly thought he was a fake police officer.
Siddhirganj Thana’s Investigation Officer, Abu Said Pial, stated that the students handed over the two men to the police. He clarified that one of the suspects claims to be a police officer, and the police are investigating the incident to determine the truth and take appropriate action.
