It is matter of deep concern that professional criminals have become active in the wake of police inaction after the July students uprising. We have seen incidents like kidnapping, robbery, threatening businessmen and extortion. Crimes like mugging have become an awful fear for city dwellers.
The most alarming thing is that the police say they have received information about the involvement of top terrorists with professional criminals in these crimes.
According to a report published in this daily on Thursday, the overall law and order has continued to deteriorate in the country.
Though police have returned to their work, the people are not feeling safe and sound with the current situation. The morale of the law enforcers have also reached rock bottom as the deposed Awami League government used them as ‘political tool’.
Reportedly, 329 cases have been registered only in cases of kidnapping from last August to December. Besides, 279 robbery-prone ‘spots’ have been identified in the capital and its surrounding areas. Several high-level meetings of law enforcement agencies have recently discussed the involvement of professional terrorists and top terrorists in these crimes.
The crime activities of top terrorists have increased in Dhanmondi, Elephant Road, New Market, Neelkhet, Hazaribagh, Mohammadpur, Kafrul, Pallabi, Badda, Mohakhali and Motijheel areas of the capital. Not only in the capital, crimes also increased in the last few months in various parts of the country.
How the criminals were released is the big question.
Even after five months, the police could not handle the situation. Criminals are taking advantage of the police not being fully capable of maintaining law and order.
Apart from this, a large part of the weapons and ammunition lost by the police throughout the country, including Dhaka, during the uprising has not yet been recovered. This is also a major concern in terms of citizen’s security.
At the moment, the law and order situation along with the high prices of daily necessities are the two biggest concerns of the people.
The involvement of professional criminals and top terrorists in crimes is creating a sense of insecurity among the business community and common people. Such an environment is also not normal for the functioning of the economy as a whole. Strict action must be taken against professional criminals and top terrorists to ensure safety and security of public life.
