Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, Adviser to the Ministries of Road Transport and Bridges, Railways, and Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, has issued a stern warning against the illegal extraction of sand using dredgers.

He stated that river erosion is caused by changes in the river’s natural course and the unlawful dredging of sand. The operation of dredgers contributes to erosion in surrounding areas. If necessary, the army and coast guard will be deployed to seize illegal dredgers and bring their owners under the purview of the law.

He made these remarks on Wednesday (June 11) during a visit to the erosion-affected area of the Padma Bridge Construction Yard protection embankment in Majhirghat, Purbo Naodoba Union, Jazira Upazila of Shariatpur district.

During the visit, Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, Adviser to the Ministries of Finance and Science & Technology, said that if the Water Development Board and the Bridge Division provide them with the feasibility and technical designs, they will be able to solve the erosion problem quickly.

Shariatpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ashraf Uddin, Superintendent of Police Md. Nazrul Islam, Executive Engineer of the Water Development Board Mohammad Tarek Hasan, and other senior officials were also present at the time.
