The state, on Saturday, submitted a petition to the Appellate Division, seeking permission to appeal against a High Court decision from October last year that dismissed four extortion cases filed against BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman.
Along with the petition, the state has requested a stay on the High Court’s verdict.
According to court sources, the appeal has been scheduled for a hearing tomorrow, 5 January. The hearing will be conducted by a four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam.
In its submission, the state argued that the High Court’s decision to dismiss the cases was flawed and called for a review of the judgment. These cases were initially dismissed by the High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain on 23 October 2024.
The extortion allegations against Tarique Rahman stem from cases filed at Gulshan, Kafrul, Shahbagh, and Dhanmondi police stations during the tenure of the caretaker government in 2007. The complaints were lodged by various individuals, accusing Tarique of extorting money during that period.
