Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that the BGB force will have to be strong and fearless to protect every inch of the border and stop smuggling.

Reminding the responsibility of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), he made this remark while speaking at the ‘BGB Day-2024’ at the Border Conference Centre of the BGB in Dhaka’s Pilkhana on Monday.

Urging the BGB personnel to carry out duty as vigilant guard, he said the frontier force has been performing several duties, including maintaining law and order inside the country, assisting the civil administration, accidents, natural disasters and emergency along with guarding the borders.

Recalling the role of the then BDR during the Liberation War, he said the BGB is a disciplined force with the glory of valor and tradition and their patriotism, honesty and unwavering morale are the biggest tolls in severing the country.

The home adviser also said that the success of a well-disciplined force depends on truthfulness and establishing a chain of command at every level.

BGB Director General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui delivered the welcome speech at the event, among others, attended by Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Md Khuda Baksh Chowdhury and the Ministry of Home’s Public Security Division Secretary Dr Nasim Ahmed.

Meanwhile, the government has formed a seven-member commission to re-investigate the BDR carnage committed in February, 2009, Home Adviser retired Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Monday.

Home Affairs ADviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury made the announcement during an event at the BGB Headquarters in Dhaka on Monday.

Former BGB Director General Major General ALM Fazlur Rahman will lead the commission, the Home Adviser told reporters after attending a programme at Pilkhana BGB Headquarters.

Other members of the commission include two representatives from the armed forces, one senior police officer, a member of the civil service, and two university professors- one from Dhaka University and the other from Jagannath University.

Jahangir Alam also said that the commission would gather all relevant information, evidence and documents related to the Pilkhana killings.

Two members of the commission will come from armed forces, one from civil service, one teacher from Dhaka University and one from Jagannath University and one from police, Jahangir added.

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has already approved the commission on Sunday night, the Home Adviser said.

On December 17, the Adviser had said a committee would be formed within five working days to re-investigate the killings during the massacre at the BDR, now Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

A total of 74 people, including 57 army officers, were killed during the BDR carnage on February 25-26 in 2009.
