Srimangal streets turn into garbage dumps
Moulvibazar correspondent :
Various streets and alleys in the town of Srimangal in Moulvibazar have now become temporary garbage dumps.
Pedestrians, students, teachers, guardians, businessmen, and the general public are becoming sick of the putrid stench of garbage dumped in these places every day.
The garbage dump in the College Road area, in particular, has been one of the city’s problems for a long time. There are educational institutions, shops, and houses next to that location.
Locals complain that despite demands for relocation over the years, the municipality and the administration have not taken any effective initiative.
In this situation, last Sunday, students of Srimangal Government College, The Residential Model School and College, and Gausia Shafiqia Sunni Madrasa blocked the garbage dump on College Road with a bamboo barricade.
They claim that they were forced to take this step despite a long-standing agitation without receiving a solution.
Meanwhile, the upazila administration and the municipal authorities held an emergency meeting on Monday morning to resolve the situation after the incident.
The meeting, held at the Gausia Shafiqia Sunnia Madrasa premises, was attended by students, locals, and the administration.
As no solution was found, a second emergency meeting was called at the municipality office in the evening.
The meeting was attended by the municipal administrator, representatives of the army, law enforcement agencies, protesting students, and representatives of various professions.
It was informed during the meeting that a proposal has been sent to the Ministry of Local Government for the relocation of the garbage dump, and the process is currently underway. Officials expressed hope that a permanent solution will be found very soon.
Until now, students and locals were requested to temporarily dispose of garbage at the current location.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the bamboo barricades provided by the students were still in place at the garbage disposal site on College Road.
