‘Specialist doctors need to be produced for cancer treatment’

Health and Family Welfare Adviser Nurjahan Begum on Monday said more specialist doctors need to be produced in the country to ensure effective cancer treatment as the number of cancer patients continues to rise.
“The number of cancer patients in our country is increasing day by day-not only breast cancer but other types as well. We need to change our food habits and become more health-conscious,” she said.
The adviser was addressing a programme marking Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital.
“We must produce enough specialist doctors so that cancer awareness and treatment can reach people in every district,” Nurjahan said, adding that trained professionals are vital in expanding cancer care across the country, reports BSS.
Highlighting the government’s initiatives, she said, “The present government has already ensured facilities for cancer, kidney, and dialysis treatment at every divisional hospital.”
“The Linear Accelerator (LINAC) machine is crucial for cancer treatment. The government has taken an initiative worth Tk 363 crore to procure six more LINAC machines, and I hope these will arrive within the next few months,” she said.
Praising the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for taking timely initiatives in breast cancer treatment, Noorjahan said the government would continue providing all necessary support in this regard.
Blaming bureaucratic complexities for slowing down development activities, the adviser said, “You will be surprised to know that a single file remained pending with one person for one month and 10 days. Tell me, how can development move forward like this?” She urged concerned officials to work with utmost sincerity.
Referring to the upcoming national election, she said, “After the national election in February, some of us may no longer be here. But institutions like Grameen Bank and Grameen NGOs will always stand beside you. Through Grameen Bank, we will continue to serve ordinary people, and whenever you call us, we will respond.”
Noting the limitations in sending doctors abroad for training due to financial constraints, Nurjahan suggested inviting foreign specialists to Bangladesh for imparting training to local doctors.
“There is no barrier to gaining experience by bringing foreign experts here,” she said, urging the Directorate General of Health Services and all concerned to take necessary measures to this end.
Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Professor Dr Md Abu Jafar said breast cancer is completely curable if detected early.
“We must not delay or feel embarrassed to go for screening,” he said, adding that although awareness has traditionally focused on women over 40, many cases are now being found among those under 30.
“So, regardless of age, anyone noticing symptoms should consult a doctor immediately,” he added.
