Speaker of the Parliament Dr Shirin Sharmin Choudhury enphasised on the importance of increasing the number of female police for a standard and strong workforce.
“The number of female police should be increased for a standard and strong workforce to be a key part to reduce gender-based violence, conflict and confrontation, providing sense of security, especially for women and children.”
The Speaker said this on Wednesday while inaugurating the second National Conference 2014 of Bangladesh Police Women’s Network (BPWN) at Mirpur Staff College in the city. BPWN organized the two-day conference from June 11 with the assistance of Bangladesh Police, where more than 100 women police officials from different countries across the world are taking part.
Praising the success of women team at UN Mission in Haiti, the Speaker said, “Bangladesh Women Police have already proved its efficiency after facing all the challenges successfully.” “High women police officials are now acting as envoys of change in the police,” she said, adding that women police can lead the force utilizing their efficiency and professionalism. State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan said, “The female members of Bangladesh Police have been working successfully to serve the nation by maintaining law and order situation.” “Female members in the police are now helping to create a positive image of the force through their work.”, he added. Home Secretary CQK Mostak Ahmed, Inspector general of Police Hasan Mahmood Khandaker and Additional IGP, CID Muklesur Rahman, UNDP representative for Police Reform Project (PRP) Henk Van Zyl spoke with Additional Police Commissioner (traffic) Mili Biswas PPM in the chair.
The speakers lauded the contributions and performance of women police members and called upon all members of Bangladesh Police to be friends of the common people and stand by them at their needs.
Currently, 7609 female police members have been working successfully in Bangladesh Police in different ranks and capacities throughout the country, Inspector general of Police Hasan Mahmood Khandaker said.
