Smuggling is not stopping at the Sylhet border. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Sylhet Battalion’s operations have seized crores of taka worth of smuggled goods from various borders from Thursday to Friday morning.
A press release from the BGB’s Sylhet Battalion (48 BGB) said that separate operations were conducted by Pratappur, Bichnakandi, Dibirhaor, Sonarhat, Kalasadek and Kalairag BOPs and Indian cows, T-shirts, trousers, onions, tomatoes, betel leaves, bidis and a boat used for illegally extracting stones were seized.
In addition, a special patrol team of the battalion headquarters conducted an operation in the Naiorpool area of Sylhet city with the help of the army. During this, a large quantity of Indian sarees, blankets, skin bright cream and Nivea body lotion were seized. The estimated market value of all the seized goods is about one crore taka.
Meanwhile, the Zakiganj Battalion (19 BGB) said in a release that on the night of September 19, a group of smugglers were arrested in Phulbari, Jaintapur Upazila. 15 Indian cows were seized without owners in a raid in the border area.
In addition, 240 kg of Indian cumin seeds were seized without owners in Suraighat on the border of Kanaighat upazila on September 18. A total of 12 lakh 90 thousand taka of goods were seized in these two raids.
Nazmul Haque, commander of Sylhet Battalion (48 BGB), said, “On the instructions of the higher headquarters, BGB’s operations and intelligence activities are continuing to maintain security at the border, prevent smuggling and drug trafficking. As part of this, this huge amount of smuggled goods has been seized in the border area.”
Md. Zubair Anwar, commander of Zakiganj Battalion (19 BGB), said, “Anti-smuggling operations including intelligence activities are ongoing to ensure border security. BGB will continue such operations to protect the border.”
