A Sirajganj court has sentenced six individuals to death for the abduction and murder of a vegetable seller in 2017.

Senior District and Sessions Judge M Ali Ahmed delivered the verdict in the absence of the accused on Tuesday, according to bench clerk Manowarul Islam.

The six men sentenced to death are Khaja Mia, Md Bashu, Md Enamul, Md Mojahid, Saidul Islam, and Milon Sarker.

The victim, Nazmul Islam, hailed from Kismat Kasba village in Naogaon Sadar Upazila. His body was discovered on August 12, 2017, near the Hatikumrul roundabout in Salanga, Sirajganj.

According to case files, Nazmul had purchased vegetables from Chargauri Hat in Naogaon on August 10 and sold them in Dhaka’s Baipail. Around 3 a.m. the next day, he was abducted in a black microbus from Chandra. His kidnappers demanded Tk 50,000 in ransom from his family.

Nazmul’s family promised to pay the ransom on August 12. However, that morning, police informed them that his body had been recovered. The family later confirmed his identity.

Following the incident, Nazmul’s father, Abdur Rahman, filed a murder case with Salanga Police Station. Seven individuals were initially charged after an investigation, but one suspect, Saiful Islam, died during the trial, and his name was dropped from the case.

Arrest warrants have been issued for the six convicts, who remain at large. Each has also been fined Tk 10,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional one-month prison term, said Manowarul.
