NN Online Report:
Six prisoners were killed during a violent clash between two rival groups inside the Jamalpur District Jail, authorities confirmed on Friday.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, also left the jailer and seven prison guards injured. The deceased inmates have been identified as Arman, Raihan, Shyamal, Fazle Rabbi Babu, Jasim, and Rahat—all of whom were residents of Jamalpur Sadar Upazila.
According to Abu Fattah, the jailer of Jamalpur District Jail, the confrontation between the two groups of inmates escalated into a deadly clash, resulting in the deaths of six inmates. However, he did not provide further details on the exact circumstances of their deaths.
Following the clash, the situation spiraled out of control, with inmates overpowering the jailer, taking him captive, and attempting to escape from the facility. In the chaos, they vandalized two prison buildings, the jailer’s office, and one of the main gates. They also set several parts of the prison on fire and held 14 prison guards hostage.
To regain control of the situation, prison guards fired warning shots. In response to the escalating crisis, reinforcements from the Army, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), police, and fire service were deployed to the jail. The hostages were eventually released, and by 3:00 AM on Friday, authorities had fully restored order within the facility.
Four critically injured inmates, along with three prison guards, were transported to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and Jamalpur General Hospital for treatment. The jailer confirmed that no prisoners managed to escape during the incident.
The Public Works Department has already begun repairing the damaged gates and other structures within the prison.
Jamalpur District Jail currently houses 669 inmates, including 100 convicted prisoners. Authorities confirmed that there are no militants among the inmate population.
