At least six students of the Arabic department of Dhaka University have been caught cheating in the last semester final exam held in July-August.
According to department sources, Md. Hasikul Islam, resident of Ziaur Rahman Hall of 2021-22 session, the president of Ziaur Rahman Hall Bandhan, office secretary of the Zia Hall Environment and Disaster Management Club and also a Cadet Corporal of the Army wing of the university’s Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC), was caught cheating with his mobile phone by the on-duty examiner and Associate Professor of the department Dr. Mohammad Zahirul Islam on August 12 during the exam of ‘Bangladesh Studies 2’ (course no. 308).
On the same day, Dr. ABM Siddiqur Rahman Nizami, Professor of the department, caught Md. Miftahur Rahman of SurjaSen Hall and Sharif Ahmed of Bijoy Ekattor Hall with mobile phones in the same examination hall.
An on-duty examiner caught Naimur Rahman Ridom, a student of 2022-23 session and member of the Dhaka University unit of Bangladesh Democratic Students Council (BDSC) and Assistant Secretary of the sports cell of this organization, red-handed with his Mobile Phone in the fourth semester final exam of course number 206 on July 26.
When asked about the allegations, the accused BDSC leader Naimur Rahman Ridom said, “The notebook was seized but there was no case of cheating using the phone. He said, “Examiner suspected that I had cheated. Later he took my notebook and kept it for a while, then returned it.”
A examiner caught Md. Ramzan Ali of 2022-23 session and resident of Surja Sen hall with his mobile phone in the exam hall on July 20, the first exam day of the fourth semester.
Dr. Zubair Mohammad Ehsanul Haque, the chairman of the department, caught Zahidul Islam Tahsin of 2022-23 session with an answer sheet during exam.
Md. Hasikul Islam said The New Nation, “I mistakenly took my mobile phone into my pocket and went to the exam hall.” “When examiner searched me, I handed over the phone myself,” said Hasikul.
Professor Dr. Zubair Mohammad Ehsanul Haque, Chairman of the department, said The New Nation about the accused, “University administration will take action.”
On the issue of Ziaur Rahman Hall Badhan unit President Md. Hasikul Islam, Dhaka University Chapter Badhan President Md. Zainul Abedin said The New Nation, “We completely follow the constitution and action will be taken according to its rules.”
Dr. Rafiqul Islam, Assistant Proctor and Professor of the department, said The New Nation, “The only evidence of the students’ malpractice in the exam hall is the confiscated mobile phones and so we have no plan to give them back the devices until this matter is fully resolved.”
