In a heart-wrenching incident at Kumudini Hospital, Mirzapur, Tangail, Sumna Akhter (25), wife of Singaporean expatriate Farhad Mia, delivered sextuplets, comprising four daughters and two sons, who tragically did not survive. The devastating loss has plunged the family into mourning, while Sumna Akhter herself remains stable after the ordeal.
The rare occurrence unfolded last Thursday (April 11) when Sumna Akhter gave birth to the sextuplets around noon on Eid day. The loss of all six babies has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving a profound impact on all who heard of the incident.
Headmaster Md. Shajahan Mia of Sakhipur Upazila Udayan High School confirmed Sumna Akhter’s husband’s identity and provided insights into the family’s background. Farhad Mia, residing in Singapore, returned home briefly on leave before the tragedy struck. Sumna Akhter, five months pregnant, experienced severe pain on Eid day, prompting her family to rush her to Sakhipur Upazila Health Complex and subsequently to Kumudini Hospital for advanced care.
Tragically, despite the hospital’s best efforts, all six babies succumbed shortly after birth. Medical experts attributed their premature demise to their incomplete gestation. Sumna Akhter, however, emerged physically unharmed from the traumatic experience. Speaking on behalf of the family, Feroza Begum, Sumna Akhter’s mother-in-law, expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the babies and underscored Sumna Akhter’s devout nature. The family’s cherished hope of welcoming a child has been shattered by this devastating turn of events, leaving them united in their efforts to support Sumna Akhter’s recovery.
