Chief Adviser to the Interim Government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has paid heartfelt tribute to former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, acknowledging his significant contributions to regional peace, prosperity, and cooperation.
Expressing profound sorrow and condolences over the passing of Dr. Singh, who also served as Congress President, at the age of 92, Nobel Laureate Dr. Yunus stated in a condolence message on Friday that Dr. Singh would be remembered for his steadfast commitment to the welfare of the Indian people.
Describing Dr. Singh as a close friend, Professor Yunus characterised him as a leader of great humility, a visionary statesman, and a champion of public welfare. He noted that Dr. Singh’s leadership not only shaped India’s future but also strengthened the bonds of friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation between Bangladesh and India.
Reflecting on Dr. Singh’s role in fostering regional collaboration, Professor Yunus highlighted his visionary approach and unwavering dedication to advancing peace and prosperity in South Asia. He urged South Asian nations to honour Dr. Singh’s legacy by continuing to work together towards these shared goals.
The Chief Adviser fondly recalled his cherished interactions with Dr. Singh, including a warm congratulatory message from the former Indian Prime Minister following Professor Yunus’s receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize in October 2006.
He also reminisced about their meetings in January 2007 in New Delhi and December 2009, the latter when Professor Yunus delivered the 2nd Prof. Hiren Mukerjee Annual Parliamentary Lecture, attended by members of both houses, including the Speaker of the Rajya Sabha.
On behalf of the government and people of Bangladesh, Professor Yunus extended his heartfelt condolences to Dr. Singh’s family, the Government of India, and its people.
