Bangladesh has a new bragging right: a crore tax identification number (TIN) holder.

But this numerical feat is a hollow victory when juxtaposed with the stark reality: nearly six out of ten TIN holders didn’t file a single tax return.

This glaring discrepancy underscores a systemic failure that’s choking our nation’s development.

Our economy has soared, but tax revenue hasn’t kept pace. We’re a laggard in a region known for economic tigers.

The reasons are manifold: fear of harassment, complex paperwork, and a culture of non-compliance. But the root of the problem lies in a tax administration stuck in the analogue age.

Automation is the key. Simplifying the process, reducing the human interface, and ensuring transparency will go a long way in boosting taxpayer confidence.

Regular, independent surveys can pinpoint pain points and guide necessary reforms. The NBR has a crucial role to play.

It must shed its image as a revenue-hungry behemoth and transform into a taxpayer-friendly service provider. Capacity building is essential to equip tax officials with the skills to navigate the digital age.

But the onus isn’t solely on the government. We, the citizens, must also shoulder responsibility.

Tax evasion is a crime against our nation. It deprives us of essential public services, from education and healthcare to infrastructure. It’s time to change the narrative.

Let’s transition from a nation of TIN holders to a community of responsible taxpayers.

By paying our dues, we’re not just fulfilling an obligation but investing in our country’s future.

The NBR must modernize its operations by embracing technology and simplifying tax processes to foster trust.

Taxpayers should fulfill their civic duty by understanding and complying with tax laws while demanding accountability and transparency.

The media can play a pivotal role by raising awareness about the importance of tax compliance and holding authorities responsible.

Civil society organizations can contribute by advocating for tax reforms and educating the public about their tax rights and obligations.
